Professor Dr. AKM Fazlul Haque: Pioneering Colorectal Surgeon

Meet Professor Dr. AKM Fazlul Haque, a renowned figure in the world of colorectal surgery. As the founder Chairman and Professor of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, he has left an indelible mark on the field.

Dr. Haque's journey began in 1982 when he earned his MBBS Degree from Dhaka Medical College. Over the years, he accumulated a wealth of experience, obtaining Fellowship (FCPS, Surgery) in 1989. He even expanded his knowledge during a registrarship at Singapore General Hospital.

His contributions to colorectal surgery are unparalleled. He has performed the highest number of colorectal surgeries worldwide since 1996, making him a world-ranking expert. Dr. Haque specializes in various colorectal conditions, including cancer, polyps, fistulas, and more.

Notably, he played a pivotal role in establishing colorectal surgery as a distinct specialty in Bangladesh. Under his leadership, BSMMU recognized Colorectal Surgery as an independent department and introduced the M.S. degree program in the field in 2006.

With nearly 25 years of practice, he has consulted over 650,000 patients and operated on 95,000 individuals, demonstrating his dedication to patient care. Dr. Haque introduced modern surgical techniques, such as double stapling for rectal cancer, the Longo operation for hemorrhoids, and complex fistula operations.

Moreover, he actively promotes non-surgical procedures like Rubber Ring Ligation for hemorrhoid patients, offering a holistic approach to healthcare.

Dr. Haque's influence extends internationally. He initiated international training programs and observed "World Piles & Colorectal Cancer Day" to raise awareness globally.

His legacy in colorectal surgery continues to impact countless lives, solidifying his position as a trailblazer and a true pioneer in the field.
